Buttock Surgery – an increase is size, and popularity!

Back in 1992 Sir Mix-a-lot sang “I like big butts and I cannot lie”, and the song ended up being the second best-selling song in the US. However at that time a larger butt was only considered attractive within certain cultures. The body type in mainstream fashion at that time was actually a thin, athletic figure, seen on supermodels Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell and Claudia Schiffer.

Fast forward 25 years and we have seen a shift in popular body types. The popularity of supermodels has been replaced with the popularity of celebrities like singers and TV stars. The fuller butt body shape started coming into fashion when singers Beyonce and J-Lo came on the scene, and has continued with Nikki Minaj and Iggy Azalea, plus reality stars like the Kardashians. But this popular body shape is not just a large buttock, it is accompanied by a very thin waist, and toned legs.

Celebrities are not afraid of showing off their fuller butts on social media, resulting in the term the ‘belfie’ being created. Here are some ‘belfie’ posts:

Internet commenters are quick to suggest some of these celebrities have had plastic surgery to achieve their fuller butts. So how is a bigger butt achieved if you were not born with it? Buttock Augmentation is usually performed by taking your own fat via Liposuction and injecting it into your buttocks. Fat can be taken from any area that you have excess, but often fat is taken from the waist to create that thin waist/large buttock ratio.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons there was a 28% increase in Buttock Augmentations between 2014 & 2015. Unfortunately there are no official plastic surgery statistics available in Canada, so we asked Toronto Plastic Surgeon Dr. Martin Jugenburg about the butt augmentation trend, and he tells plasticsurgeryinfo.ca: “The popularity of Brazilian Butt Lifts is continually growing and I do not see an end to it any time soon. Brazilian Butt Lifts are by far the most posted, reposted, liked, and shared photos on Instagram in my experience.  And it is the Brazilian Butt Lift transformations that are amongst the most popular on Snapchat.”

Many people comment on social media saying they do not like the large buttock trend, but what they do not realize is that buttock augmentation can be subtle. The surgery can fill and lift a flat buttock…with a really natural result. This is illustrated by these photos from Dr. Jugenburg and Dr. Carman:
