IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT CHOOSING A SURGEON
FOR A PLASTIC SURGERY PROCEDURE IN CANADA

At plasticsurgeryinfo.ca we only promote plastic surgeons for invasive plastic surgery procedures (by invasive we mean procedures where the skin is cut with a scalpel). Our new ad campaign is promoting the importance of consulting with a plastic surgeon and bringing awareness about this important issue. Our ads will be running across Canada in The Globe and Mail and in Ontario in a variety of publications, including Fashion Magazine, Toronto Life, Lou Lou and West of the City.

In many provinces in Canada any doctor with a license to practice medicine can practice ‘cosmetic surgery’. This means a doctor with little or no surgical training can call themselves a ‘cosmetic surgeon’ and perform invasive plastic surgery procedures. There are dentists performing liposuction and family physicians performing tummy tucks! Where did these doctors learn these procedures? A doctor can learn breast augmentation surgery in a weekend course and legally perform this procedure. Many ads for plastic surgery you see in papers and magazines are not by plastic surgeons so it is important you do your research before booking your surgery.

A plastic surgeon does 5 years of plastic surgery training after he receives his medical degree and many will do even further cosmetic plastic surgery training after the 5 years. By choosing a plastic surgeon you know your surgeon has gone through extensive plastic and reconstructive surgery training and residency, and passed comprehensive written and oral examinations.

Some provinces have regulations in place that make it difficult for non plastic surgeons to perform these procedures. Wherever you live in Canada you can make sure your doctor is a plastic surgeon by following the search guidelines below.

To find out if a doctor is a plastic surgeon visit www.royalcollege.ca click on 'directory of fellows' and then 'confirm status'. Enter the last name of the doctor you are researching, city and province and hit 'search'. Next to the surgeons name in the last column it states the doctors specialty which should read plastic surgery. If it lists anything other than plastic surgery, they are not a plastic surgeon. If the surgeon you are researching does not come up, then they do not have a specialty with The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and are not a plastic surgeon. You can also search the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons surgery website www.plasticsurgery.ca (please note not all plastic surgeons join the society).

The only exception to this is the specialty otolaryngology (otherwise called ear, nose and throat surgery). Otolaryngologists have been trained in facial plastic surgery and so if you are considering a facial surgery procedure you can consult with a otolaryngologist (otherwise called an ENT: ear, nose and throat surgeon) or a plastic surgeon.

If you go on a consult for a plastic surgery procedure ask 'are you a plastic surgeon'. A doctor can list all sorts of 'cosmetic surgery' societies they belong to to make themselves look very educated, but a lot of these societies do not reflect the surgeons education or experience and can be easy to join. Only a plastic surgeon can join the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons. If they do not list this society and are calling themselves a 'cosmetic surgeon', they are probably not a plastic surgeon. You may even find some non plastic surgeons calling themselves plastic surgeons or for example coming up under plastic surgery in a yellowpages online search, so it is important you do your research on the doctor.

We encourage anyone considering a plastic surgery procedure in Canada to consult with a Canadian plastic surgeon.
