Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia) in Canada

  Men are occasionally plagued with the embarrassing problem of
developing breasts. This condition is known as 'Gynecomastia'. This condition is thought to be hereditary, caused by obesity, diet or aging, or by certain drugs or medical problems. Although rarely talked about, it is a fairly common problem.

There are 2 surgical approaches to this problem:

  The first is liposuction, which can be used to suck out the entire breast and smooth and flatten the skin. Ultrasound liposuction is particularly effective in this regard as it helps to shrink the skin in this area. This operation leaves little to no scaring and reshapes the chest area to its normal shape.

  An alternative to liposuction in the chest area is to excise the extra skin
and breast tissue with a surgical incision. This may be as small as an
incision around the nipple or may be larger depending on how much skin
needs to be removed.

  Both surgeries will require wearing a post operative compression garment
to help aid the final result.

  The surgery is usually done on an outpatient basis. You will feel discomfort, but any pain can be controlled with medication. You can expect your chest to be bruised, swollen and ache and this can last for a few weeks.

  The results of a male breast reduction are instantaneous but the final result will not be seen until swelling has reduced.Your surgeon will give you specific recovery instructions but usually you will be asked to rest for the first week. You will probably be instructed not to participate in strenuous activities for 1 - 4 weeks.
