Facial implants (chin and cheek implants) in Canada
Facial
implants are small silicone strips used to balance features of the face by being implanted into the cheek and/or chin.
Chin
augmentation is a procedure that is gradually increasing in popularity.
Much of the facial appearance and profile can be quite dramatically altered
with chin augmentation. Ideal chin positions should be 1 - 2mm behind
the furthest projection of the lower lip on women and at the furthest
projection or slightly ahead of it in men. This of course has to be adjusted to individual
parameters of varying facial features - especially the nose chin relationship.
Chin augments can be performed in various manners. The simplest method
is by placing an artificial implant over the chin bone either through
an internal incision in the mouth or an external incision under the chin.
Another approach without the use of implants is bycutting the chin bone
surgically and advancing it forward. This can achieve similar results without the implant but generally
involves more surgery and more healing.
Cheek
Augmentation, like chin augmentation, is a procedure that has
gradually increased in popularity over the last 10 years. Much of the
facial appearance and profile can be quite dramatically altered with chin
augmentation. The ideal cheek projection should be as far out as the cornea
of the eyeball or slightly further. This of course has to be adjusted for individual facial parameters and personal preference. The surgery involves placement of an artificial implant over the cheek bone. This can be done by either
an intra oral incision or an incision just below the eyelid margin.
The
results of facial implants are instantaneous and can be enjoyed for
many years to come. Different sizes and shapes can be chosen and care
should be taken to discuss thoroughly with your Plastic Surgeon the best
size and shape to fit you.
The
surgery is usually done on an outpatient basis. After
your surgery you will be asked to keep your head elevated to avoid increased swelling.
You will feel discomfort and any pain can be controlled with medication.
You can expect your face to be bruised, swollen and ache and this can last for a few
weeks.
Your
surgeon will give you specific recovery instructions but usually you
will be asked to rest for the first week. You will probably be instructed
not
to participate in strenuous activities for 2 - 6 weeks.
The
results can be seen immediately and become more prominent as
swelling is reduced. It’s effects are permanent.
To
discuss your particular situation in more detail, consult with a
plastic
surgeon in your area.
