Artecoll / Artesense in Canada

  ArteSense (the next generation of Artecoll) is the only permanent injectable implant on the market and is used for the correction of wrinkles and other skin depressions. ArteSense is composed of microscopic PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) beads in a collagen solution containing anesthetic for the relief of post-treatment tenderness. Artecoll is a permanent implant that remains for the life of the patient and has been approved in Canada since 2006 and Artecoll since 1998.

  Before your book your ArteSense treatment your physician may give you a skin test, the skin test is used to determine if you are sensitive or allergic to the collagen or anesthetic in the product.

  During the procedure a plastic surgeon, dermatologist or nurse carefully injects the ArteSense into the skin. You may be given a topical anesthetic to avoid pain, especially in the lip area. When a foreign object is inserted into our body, our body reacts by forming connective tissue (collagen) around it so when ArteSense is injected into the skin your body will naturally form connective tissue around it. This process is usually complete in 3 months.

  Depending on the patient and the correction to be made, a second or third injection may be needed if the degree of correction from the first injection is not optimal. ArteSense is a permanent implant that remains for the life of the patient and it's effects have been shown to last 10 years and longer. However, final results will vary depending on each patient as the skin continues to age, as well as facial mimicry (frowning, squinting, smiling, etc.).

  ArteSense, like many non-surgical procedures, does not have to be performed by a plastic surgeon, but care should be taken when choosing a clinic. Some clinics may have estheticians with no medical training at all performing ArteSense injections so it is important you carefully choose who to perform your treatment. Many Canadian plastic surgeons have medical aesthetic staff performing ArteSense injections at their clinics.
